2017 TÜV AUSTRIA Science Prize: young researchers take center stage

A total of 54 contenders – a group of outstanding young researchers, developers and companies active in the fields of safety & security, technology, environment, quality and sustainability – took part in the contest. Included in the competition were dissertations and theses at technical universities and universities of applied sciences, final papers at engineering colleges (HTL) as well as development projects implemented in companies.
Three projects per category were nominated for the 2017 TÜV AUSTRIA Science Prize. The winners received their awards in a ceremony held in the domed hall at TU Wien on the evening of October 19.
Winners from Styria and Upper Austria
Markus Ernst won the “Universities/universities of applied sciences” category of this year’s Science Prize with his doctoral thesis at TU Graz on the optimization of automotive software. The increasing importance of IT systems in car maunfacturing means that components must become even more reliable while at the same time security risks to humans and machines need to be minimized.
The prize in the “HTL final papers” category went to Anna Bruckmaier, Daniel Brunner and Simon Huber from HTL Braunau. In the scope of their final paper, the team developed an intelligent guide post that increases road safety.
The “Business practice” category was won by Efficient Energy Technology GmbH, a start-up company from Graz, which developed a plug-and-play power station to be installed on a balcony. It allows households to produce up to 25 percent of their electricity demand themselves.
TÜV AUSTRIA audience prizes
The audience also had their say at the TÜV AUSTRIA Science Prize event. Three winners were determined by the audience out of the projects nominated for the Science Prize.
A student from FH Joanneum came first in the “Universities/universities of applied sciences” category with his master thesis on the subject of “IoT Firmware Security”.
Stefan Erben und Andreas Mattes from HTL Hollabrunn were awarded the audience prize in the “HTL final papers” category for their final paper “Brain scan analysis through digital image processing”.
For Sports GmbH won the audience’s favour with the high-tech sports product “For Sports” in the “Business practice” category.
Digital Acceleration Incubator “Next Horizon”
An evening dedicated to research, technology and innovation was the perfect setting to present the latest TÜV AUSTRIA initiative, the launch of TÜV AUSTRIA Group’s Digital Acceleration Incubator, under the slogan “NEXT HORIZON”.
With this initiative, Austria’s leading technological services company intends to increase the pace of innovation even more and sound out the current technological and economic horizons of thought in the areas of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things and automated driving.
