Safe Secure Systems Lab - S³ Lab

Throughout the technological development on the course of digitalization, the fusion of the physical and cyber world increases. This results in stronger merging of the requirements of functional safety and IT-Security. Thus, safety and security concepts and assessments can’t be separated anymore. Furthermore, the increasing integration of artificial intelligence in industry devices requires new testing and certification processes to guarantee safety as well as security of cyber physical systems. With the operation of the S³ Lab at the Technology and Innovation Centre of the TÜV AUSTRIA Group in Vienna, costumers can be actively supported in conquering those topics.

Equipped with high tech laboratory equipment, the S³ Lab offers safety and security testing, certification and consulting services for its costumers, throughout the whole life cycle of cyber physical systems and products.

Information security in industrial plants

Compared to typical information systems in the Enterprise-IT (IT), the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) processes like patch and incident management, are more challenging to implement in the Operational-IT (OT). The reasons are limited security measures of industrial devices and regulatory requirements or rather warranty restrictions by the manufacturer. This leads also to significant risks in terms of functional safety by OT operated facilities.
TÜV AUSTRIA has the know-how to unite the requirements of IT- and OT security and ensures functional safety as an integrated concept for industrial companies. This allows the uniform implementation of security requirements across systems by compensating measures regarding possible threats.

Consulting, auditing and training for IT/OT

  • Information security (IS) for industrial systems according to ISO 27000 and IEC 62443
  • Risk assessment of Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS) under consideration of IEC 62443-3-2
  • Support during design and implementation of risk-based security concepts in OT under consideration of necessary requirements
  • Implementation support and verification of the operative effectiveness
  • Conducting of vulnerability analyses and penetration tests, reconstruction of facility segments at network and device level in a testing environment (S³ Lab)
  • Auditing of existing IS security measures (organizational conditions, technical realization) for IACS according to the required Security Level (SL) and IEC 62443-3-3
  • Training and verification of employees regarding their security awareness

Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)

IoT stands for products used for smart home applications, whereas IIoT addresses devices used in the industrial sector. The implementation of IIoT devices in the field of industry 4.0 like production industry, logistics, access controls or facility control units, produces a vast amount of data due to the connection of different devices and services. Thus, sensitive data is generated and processed, which is a valuable resource for companies and therefore must be protected for safe operation of the business.

By certifying IIoT and IoT devices and the concluding evidence of secure designed hardware, software and application according to standards, the experts from TÜV AUSTRIA offer additional development support with their expertise for IoT and IIoT devices.

Testing and certification of IoT and IIoT devices

IT security aspects of IoT and IIoT devices, must be taken into consideration through all product development phases (e.g. planning, conception and implementation), to ensure a holistic security review. For this purpose, TÜV AUSTRIA developed independent and objective testing catalogues, which allow us to evaluate and secure IoT und IIoT devices.

Physical and cognitive assistance systems

Smaller batch sizes and faster production cycles lead to an increased amount of information and more complex tasks. This results in a higher workload and stress/demand for the employees. With the utilization of assistance systems, the physical and cognitive stress can be reduced.
Assistance systems can be divided into two groups, physical and cognitive assistance systems. The first addresses mechanical or motorized assistance, personalized workspace and collaborative robotic systems. The second deals with the real time and usability optimized provision of information for the employees.
TÜV AUSTRIA supports his customers with the safe and secure development, implementation and application of assistance systems in the field of industry 4.0.

Physical and collaborative assistance systems

One of the core applications of physical assistance systems is collaborative robotic. It takes a prominent role in the field of industry 4.0, as employees and robotic systems work together side by side at the same workstation. Within the conditions and limits of ISO/TS 15066, the physical contact between humans and robots is permitted. Thus, protection fences are not mandatory anymore.

Support during implementation of collaborative robotic systems for operators and integrators

  • Ergonomic suitability of systems based on the relevant standards and guidelines
  • Inspection of functional safety (SIL/PL) and cyber security of collaborative robotic applications
  • Validation and moderation of risk assessments according to EN ISO 12100
  • Evaluation of biomechanical limits according to ISO/TS 15066

Human-Robot Collaboration reference projects

Blue Danube Robotics
With the collision sensor AIRSKIN©, a safe and cooperative workspace between human and machine can be achieved. Instead of protective fence, a soft skin covers the robot, which allows a collaborative application of industrial robots.

TÜV AUSTRIA certified AIRSKIN© with the highest safety Level.

DFT Maschinenbau
For the handling and serving of components, a collaborative robot was implemented, to relief the physical stress of the employee’s spinal area. The contact between the personnel and robot is detected with a newly developed sensor and stopped after determination of the force limits.

TÜV AUSTRIA was commissioned by the system integrator DFT Maschinenbau, with the safety related support of a human robot collaborative application.
