Machinery Safety

TÜV AUSTRIA is an accredited testing and inspection body for testing and inspecting machines, machine parts, technical equipment and products. The fact that our employees are members of international working groups demonstrates their competence and, consequently, means that they are well versed in the established standards and the state of the art. Our satisfied customers readily accept our employees’ assistance in matters of technical safety, including machinery safety, safety of control systems and the preparation of proper technical documentation.

As a notified body in Brussels (Notified Body 0408), TÜV AUSTRIA is responsible for the inspection of machinery in accordance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Our employees prepare around 550 expert’s reports and carry out around 50 EC type tests, 250 CE conformity assessments as well as many detailed inspections and consultations per year.

EC type tests

EC type tests in accordance with Appendix IV to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC are among TÜV AUSTRIA’s services as a notified body (Notified Body 0408).

TÜV AUSTRIA is notified for the following machinery and products:

1. Circular saws (single- and multi-blade) for working with wood and material with similar physical characteristics or for working with meat and material with similar physical characteristics of the following types:

1.1. sawing machinery with fixed blade(s) during cutting, having a fixed bed or support with manual feed of the workpiece or with a demountable power feed;

1.2. sawing machinery with fixed blade(s) during cutting, having a manually operated reciprocating saw-bench or carriage;

1.3. sawing machinery with fixed blade(s) during cutting, having a built-in mechanical feed device for the workpieces, with manual loading and/or unloading;

1.4. sawing machinery with movable blade(s) during cutting, having mechanical movement of the blade, with manual loading and/or unloading.

2. Hand-fed surface planing machinery for woodworking.

3. Thicknessers for one-side dressing, having a built-in mechanical feed device, with manual loading and/or unloading for woodworking.

4. Band-saws with manual loading and/or unloading for working with wood and material with similar physical characteristics or for working with meat and material with similar physical characteristics, of the following types:

4.1. sawing machinery with fixed blade(s) during cutting, having a fixed or reciprocating-movement bed or support for the workpiece;

4.2. sawing machinery with blade(s) assembled on a carriage with reciprocating motion.

5. Combined machinery of the types referred to in points 1 to 4 and in point 7 for working with wood and material with similar physical characteristics.

6. Hand-fed tenoning machinery with several tool holders for woodworking.

7. Hand-fed vertical spindle moulding machinery for working with wood and material with similar physical characteristics.

9. Presses, including press-brakes, for the cold working of metals, with manual loading and/or unloading, whose movable working parts may have a travel exceeding 6 mm and a speed exceeding 30 mm/s.

10. Injection or compression plastics-moulding machinery with manual loading or unloading.

11. Injection or compression rubber-moulding machinery with manual loading or unloading.

13. Manually loaded trucks for the collection of household refuse incorporating a compression mechanism.

14. Vehicle servicing lifts.

16. Devices for the lifting of persons or of persons and goods involving a hazard of falling from a vertical height of more than three metres.

17. Protective devices designed to detect the presence of persons.

18. Logic units to ensure safety functions.

19. Roll-over protective structures (ROPS).

20. Falling-object protective structures (FOPS).

CE Conformity Assessments

TÜV AUSTRIA provides CE conformity assessments for machinery and products under the Machinery Directive 2006/42 EC to determine whether the safety objectives of the Machinery Directive have been met.

  • Full CE conformity assessment in accordance with the Machinery Directive
  • Review of the technical documentation in accordance with Appendix VII
  • Inspection or moderation of a risk assessment in accordance with Appendix I
  • Inspection or evaluation of a machine’s safety-related control system
  • Review of the operating instructions in accordance with Appendix I

Safety of control systems

TÜV AUSTRIA carries out inspections and evaluations of machinery and products to determine whether the safety objectives of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC have been met.

  • Testing the safety-related parts of machine control systems
  • Evaluating the required level of safety for the control system
  • Verifying and validating the safety-related parts of the control system in accordance with European Standards such as EN ISO 13849 or EN IEC 62061
  • Documenting the calculations concerning the safety-related parts of the control system

Risk assessments

TÜV AUSTRIA assists you in drawing up a risk assessment as required by Appendix I to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

  • Review of risk assessments
  • Moderation of risk assessments
  • Assistance in preparing drafts and risk assessment templates for the Machinery Directive on the basis of EN ISO 12100

CE check

Which CE regulations apply to my machine or my product?

Which documents do I therefore need to be permitted to place my machine or my product on the EEA market as a manufacturer or importer?

The CE check by TÜV AUSTRIA will help clarify the following points:

  • Determine which CE regulations apply
  • Classify the required conformity assessment procedure

Machinery safety: national services

for the safe use of work equipment in Austria:

Old work equipment

TÜV AUSTRIA assists you in maintaining your old work equipment in regard to occupational health and safety.

  • Evaluation of work equipment to determine if it may be used as work equipment (safe use of work equipment) within the meaning of § 33 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz – ASchG, Federal Law Gazette no. 450/1994 in the current version)
  • Inspection of old work equipment (without CE marking and manufactured before 1995) to determine if it is still safe to use in accordance with section 4 of the Work Equipment Regulation (Federal Law Gazette II no. 164/2000 in the current version)
  • Determine if retrofits are required on account of occupational health and safety concerns

Modifications

TÜV AUSTRIA assists you in modifying your existing work equipment in compliance with the law. Legislation obliges the employer to carry out a hazard analysis where modifications and changes have been made to its work equipment. Extensive alterations may result in new machines with a new CE marking.

  • Evaluating the modification in accordance with § 35 (2) ASchG (Federal Law Gazette no. 450/1994 in the current version) as minor or extensive
  • Review of hazard analyses
  • Moderation of hazard analyses
  • Review of the modification documentation
  • Testing and evaluating the safety-related parts of modified control systems
  • Inspection after the modification to determine if the occupational health and safety targets have been met

Linkages

TÜV AUSTRIA assists you in linking and combining your existing work equipment in compliance with the law. Legislation obliges the employer to carry out a hazard analysis where its work equipment has been linked and combined. Extensive linkages may result in new (aggregate) machines with a new CE marking.

  • Evaluating the linkage in accordance with § 35 (4) ASchG (Federal Law Gazette no. 450/1994 in the current version) as minor or extensive
  • Review of hazard analyses
  • Moderation of hazard analyses
  • Review of the linkage documentation
  • Testing and evaluating the safety-related parts of linked control systems
  • Inspection after the linkage to determine if the occupational health and safety targets have been met
