Spain’s first nuclear power plant, “Jose Cabrera” (commercial launch 1969) near the city of Guadalajara in central Spain, has been in a process of dismantling since 2006. TÜV AUSTRIA’s Spanish subsidiary “Ad Qualitas” (AdQ) performs various radiation protection services as part of the project.

Responsibilities include the coordination and assurance of operational radiation protection. Moreover, AdQ operates a technical dosimetry office, where it designs and analyses specific studies on dose reduction in accordance with the ALARA radiation protection guideline.

Currently, the deferred dismantling of the nuclear power plant’s outer shell is on the agenda. One of AdQ’s tasks is to measure and, ultimately, guarantee that these parts emit only small amounts of radiation as per the ALARA guideline, and can therefore be stored safely in a deep geological repository.
The project is due to be completed by 2018 at the latest.
