World Water Day 2019 - Water is not a matter of course in Austria

Water is Earth’s most precious resource. In the year 2019, 2 billion people still have only uncertain or no access to drinking water at all, according to the current United Nations World Water Report. Every year more than 780.000 people die due to lack of drinking water and insufficient wastewater disposal, the UN report continues. Life comes from and requires water. Water is not a matter of course even in Austria, as the drought in summer 2018 revealed.
In Salzburg measuring stations were short 100 to 200 liters/m2 of rain during a period of at least 40 days. In context, as drinking water for Salzburg‘s inhabitants as well as millions of guests each year, as bathing water, as water for artificial snow-making on ski slopes or as an important element of agriculture, water plays a big role in Salzburg. Almost every day, experts from Moser Wasser, a partner company of TÜV AUSTRIA Group, went out to develop new sources and help to get the precarious water shortage under control.
Through water exploration and development, the team headed by Moser Wasser CEOs Alfred Moser and Thomas Fleischanderl determined the water supply available in the Salzburg mountains. The team of experts is made up of hydraulic engineers, well-masters, chemists, biologists and geologists.
Thomas Fleischanderl: “Confronting changes in the climate, sustainable solutions are also needed in the area of water supply as a substantial contribution to environmental protection. At our Competence Center, we provide expert and completely product-neutral advice, develop the legally, technically and economically best solution and supervise projects up to their inspection and approval by public authorities.”
In addition to numerous well reconstructions for drinking and cooling warer, as well as industrial water catchment, Moser Wasser tapped spring captures with a total embankment of more than 50l/s. This volume of water can provide approximately 21.000 people with an extra daily supply of our most valuable food stuff - water.
Great commitment is therefore urgently required in Austria to ensure the very water supply we take for granted and protect the groundwater. The oft-mentioned push for sustainability demands first and foremost the careful handling of water, as explained powerfully by noted by French author Antoine de Saint-Exuery: “One cannot say that you are necessary in life - you are life itself!“
