After the COVID-19 shutdown: Restarting operational buildings and industrial plants

Many companies are preparing to reopen their factory and office buildings. TÜV AUSTRIA's independent tests, technical condition assessments after the building lock-down, findings and checks were important decision-making aids when it came to getting buildings up and running. Particularly where the operator's responsibility after the long phase of "state of emergency" is a little more important than in "normal times". After a longer period of standstill, defects in components can occur, for example in elevator systems. Do all safety components, including the emergency call system, function properly? Are emergency power generators or batteries in working order? Do inaccuracies in stopping cause dangerous stumbling hazards?
Operator responsibility after the long phase of "state of emergency"
"The combination of structural engineering, fire protection, property security, facility management, IT security and data protection, elevator technology, drinking water and room hygiene helps companies to implement a successful and, above all, technically safe restart with building and facility checks during shutdowns," explains Stefan Pfefferer, Business Unit Head of Real Estate Management at Austria's largest testing, inspection and certification company.
Safety checks before recommissioning
It is important to have safety checks carried out before putting plants and buildings back into operation. Stefan Pfefferer: "Often it's little things that our technicians discover as defects on site. Defects that are quickly rectified and thus often save expensive follow-up costs. We draw up a professional tender for the necessary trades and assist in the technical examination of the bids. Fast, uncomplicated, and with a lot of experience. As an independent partner, we always find the right professionals for our customers for all work in and around a building."
